Salmon is one of the most popular and nutritious fish available. Rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids vitamins and minerals salmon is a dietitian’s dream. Its versatility also makes it a home cook’s best friend – salmon can be baked, grilled, smoked or used in everything from salads to risottos. With its health benefits and culinary usefulness, it’s no wonder salmon flies off the shelves. But with prices varying widely, where can savvy shoppers find the best salmon sales? I did some investigating at major grocery retailers to find out.
Checking the Big Box Stores
Popular big box stores like Walmart and Target can be great places to find deals on kitchen staples like salmon fillets. I took a look at the weekly ads and online listings for these major retailers to see what kinds of salmon sales they had to offer.
Walmart had skin-on salmon fillets on sale for $6.98/lb and skinless fillets for $7.98/lb. They also had big 1 lb vacuum sealed bags of salmon portions for $8.98. These are pretty good prices for fresh salmon.
Target had some salmon offerings in their weekly ad and on their website. Farmed Atlantic salmon fillets were $8.99/lb. Sushi-grade wild sockeye salmon was $14.99/lb. While not the absolute lowest prices, these are in line with typical market prices for fresh salmon.
Scoping Out the Supermarkets
Next I checked the weekly circulars for major supermarket chains near me to compare their salmon deals.
Kroger had farmed salmon fillets on sale for $7.99/lb a solid price. They also had pre-marinated and stuffed salmon options for around $9.99/lb for convenient meal shortcuts.
Publix had Scottish salmon fillets for $9.99/lb and previously frozen wild caught salmon fillets for $11.99/lb. While not the cheapest, these prices were comparable to other major grocers.
Albertsons advertised their wild caught salmon fillets for just $7.49/lb in the weekly ad, one of the lowest prices I found. They also had canned red salmon on sale for $3.49 per can, making salmon patties and salads very budget friendly.
Safeway had farmed Atlantic salmon steaks on sale for $5.99/lb, the best price on fresh salmon I found in my research. Their previously frozen wild salmon fillets were $9.99/lb.
Checking the Specialty Retailers
I also checked specialty grocers that focus on natural and organic options. Prices here tend to be higher, but the quality is also more specialized.
Whole Foods Market offers only wild-caught and sustainably farmed salmon, but at higher costs. Fillet prices started at $12.99/lb for Atlantic salmon. For specialty varieties like wild king salmon, prices reached $18.99-$29.99/lb. They do offer daily deals like 12 oysters for $12 on Fridays to offset some of the higher prices.
Trader Joe’s sells only responsibly fished wild salmon. Their fresh wild sockeye fillets were $14.99/lb. Pre-cooked frozen grilled salmon fillets were $7.49 for an 8 oz package, providing a convenient option for quick meals.
Sprouts had both farm-raised and wild salmon options starting at $7.99/lb for Atlantic salmon fillets. They occasionally have flash sales where salmon is discounted to $5.99 or even $4.99/lb making it very competitively priced.
Additional Tips for Saving on Salmon
In addition to checking weekly sales, there are other tricks you can use to get high-quality salmon while spending less:
-
Buy frozen salmon – Flash frozen at sea, frozen fillets are just as nutritious at a fraction of the cost of fresh. Trader Joe’s and ALDI have good deals.
-
Look for portioned pieces – Smaller 4 oz or 8 oz salmon portions are often cheaper pound for pound than a whole fillet.
-
Buy out of season – Salmon prices are lowest in late summer/early fall when harvests are highest. Shop then and freeze extra.
-
Don’t shy away from canned salmon – Canned wild Alaskan salmon makes an affordable alternative to cook with.
-
Buy in bulk and split costs – Buying a whole side of salmon, splitting with friends and freezing can save money.
-
Don’t overpay for “premium” farmed salmon – Most Atlantic farmed salmon offers similar quality at a better value.
-
Check warehouse stores – Costco and Sam’s Club often have good deals on wild salmon.

These are both solid and reliable prices, but you may find a better deal at your neighborhood grocery store. One store had farm-raised salmon as low as $7 per pound, but most stores had the same $12 per pound as Costco. Wild salmon prices also ranged from $12 up to $20 or more.

Is Aldi salmon real salmon?
The company sells value-pack packages of frozen wild-caught pink salmon filets (which make delicious baked salmon with burst tomatoes) along with cans of wild Alaskan pink salmon (which is one canned meat you should be eating). However, much of the chain’s fresh salmon is farm-raised.
