Hey y’all! I’ve been cooking Southern food for years, and one question I get asked all the time is whether shrimp and grits is gluten-free. Let me break it down for you real quick – the answer is YES, shrimp and grits can totally be gluten-free when made properly! But there’s some important stuff you need to know to keep it safe and delicious.
The Basic Components: Breaking Down Shrimp and Grits
Are Grits Naturally Gluten-Free?
Here’s the deal with grits
- Traditional stone-ground grits are made from corn, which is naturally gluten-free
- But not all grits are created equal! Some quick/instant grits might contain additives with gluten
- Cross-contamination during processing is also something to watch out for
Pro Tip: Stick with certified gluten-free grits brands to be 100% safe. I personally love using brands like Bob’s Red Mill or Delta Blues Rice Grits (which are actually made from rice instead of corn – cool alternative, right?).
What About the Shrimp?
Plain shrimp is naturally gluten-free, but here’s what you gotta watch for:
- Avoid breaded shrimp (obviously!)
- Check any marinades or seasonings
- Be careful with pre-packaged shrimp that might have additives
- Make sure they’re cooked in a clean pan to avoid cross-contamination
Making Gluten-Free Shrimp and Grits: Tips and Tricks
Key Ingredients to Watch
When making gluten-free shrimp and grits, keep an eye on these ingredients:
- The Grits Base:
- Use certified gluten-free stone-ground grits
- Check your chicken stock/broth (some brands contain gluten)
- Make sure your dairy products are gluten-free (most are, but better safe than sorry!)
- The Shrimp Sauce:
- Use gluten-free bacon (some varieties have gluten-containing additives)
- Check your seasonings and spice blends
- Avoid flour-based thickeners (use cornstarch instead)

- Sauté shrimp in bacon fat with garlic and seasonings

Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Listen up! Here are some mistakes I’ve learned the hard way:
- Restaurant Ordering:
- Always ask about cross-contamination
- Check if they use dedicated cooking surfaces
- Ask about their stock/broth ingredients
- Verify the grits are pure corn-based
- Home Cooking:
- Don’t assume all grits are gluten-free
- Watch those sneaky seasonings
- Clean cooking surfaces thoroughly
- Keep gluten-containing ingredients separate
Tips for Dining Out
When you’re craving shrimp and grits at a restaurant:
- Call ahead to ask about gluten-free options
- Speak directly with the chef if possible
- Ask about preparation methods
- Request clean cooking surfaces and utensils
The Bottom Line
Y’all, shrimp and grits can absolutely be gluten-free and delicious! Just remember:
- Use certified gluten-free grits
- Check all ingredients carefully
- Be mindful of cross-contamination
- When in doubt, make it at home where you control the ingredients
Remember: While I’m sharing what I’ve learned, always check with your doctor or dietitian if you have serious gluten concerns or celiac disease.
Cheesy Gluten Free Shrimp and Grits
I love cheese grits. It’s in my blood. Cheese grits and fried fish are a Southern staple, at least they were in my family. I’m not even sure why I didn’t make cheese grits and fried fish for this post, it would have been a good idea- perhaps for another time.
When I got this month’s American Gluten Free box and saw the grits I knew I wanted to make Cheesy Gluten Free Shrimp and Grits. I’ve been craving shrimp and grits for awhile. I’m a sucker for anything with cheese. Plus, there was Pamela’s cornbread mix. It was a perfect combo.
These grits were a bit different than the ones I usually buy, still gluten free, but they are made from rice. I was a bit hesitant at first but turns out they are amazing.
The Delta Blues Rice Grits in this month’s American Gluten Free Box were just as creamy as corn grits but made of United States grown rice. It’s not often that you find American-grown rice, so I was really excited to try them. We are huge rice eaters (blame by Peruvian-Japanese husband, it’s in his blood) so finding a brand that is as local as you can get to us is pretty awesome.
It’s one of the things I love about getting my American Gluten Free box each month, I’m always getting to try new brands that I might not have heard of otherwise.
I love dishes that are quick and easy and these Cheesy Gluten Free Shrimp and Grits fit the bill. The grits take about 20 minutes (about the same time as rice) and shrimp cook really quickly. The corn muffins that we had on the side cooked in about 20 minutes as well so it was definitely an easy dinner.
You may have noticed that with my shrimp, there is also some bacon. Why? Because I am of the opinion that bacon makes everything taste better! I love the salty little bites it adds. Plus, my toddler won’t eat shrimp, but she will eat bacon, so her dish was cheesy grits with bacon!
I hope you love this dish, it may not be completely traditional, but it is delicious and easy to make. Plus, for all of you who can’t have corn, these rice grits are perfect!
If you love rice as much as we do, be sure to check out my Peruvian Arroz con Pollo. This traditional Peruvian Dish is packed full of flavor!
